We watched the first episode of this last night. The household consensus is "... maybe?" So here's a test of multiple spoiler cuts, with spoiler text, which I'm super pleased works. (Although if you add spoiler text, it automatically adds the word "spoiler" to the end, so this won't work as a straight lj-cut replacement.)
overall impressions spoiler
It mostly made us want to rewatch the original Miss Fisher, but it has potential. I wasn't sure how the whole niece thing was going to work, but they managed to pull that off quite nicely, and I'm on board. The updating to the 60s works pretty well, too, and I love the Adventuress's Club Phryne founded, and the array of adventuresome women (... and Samuel, who I thought at first I'd dislike but nope, I'm all for him).[/i]
the family stuff spoiler
I think Phryne would have been (and was) dismayed that her niece grew up poor and hardscrabble, but proud of her and pleased as punch to be able to give her a life of riches. Florence was totally right that Phyrne would want her to wear all of her things. I loved that Phryne kept current and had a modern home and car (omg that is such a Phryne car
).
the dodgier bits spoiler
Where it fell down for me a bit was the way Peregrine slid right into being a detective. Phryne had a background that gave her skills in that direction, along with natural talent; Peregrine just doesn't, and part of the point with Phryne was that it's not easy to be a detective, and she was a great one. It's just a bit too smooth of a takeover of Phyrne's life for me, at least so far. (I did very much appreciate her having learned to be a great shot shooting rabbits, though, that was lovely.)
