Back in my youth I read a lot of comics between the mid-80s and mid-90s, but never any of the Marvel comics about the MCU characters in the Avengers. This week I found that my library had the Winter Soldier collections so I thought I'd see what the source material was like. It was so strange -- comic!Steve seems so dour, so grumpy and cold. The story was kind of boring, actually. Lots of fight scenes that I skimmed, flipping pages until I could get to characters actually speaking to each other. Lots of Sharon, references to their past relationship. She seemed a much more relatable character than Steve. It wasn't surprising that the plot was quite different from the WS movie, but I found it funny that they kept the "Who the hell is Bucky?" line from the comic.
I wonder if the creators of the MCU based their version of Steve Rogers on a specific (not WS) run of the Captain America comic. I certainly prefer the version we got in the movies -- his warmth and humor are much more appealing than the version in the WS comics.
